Closets Promoting Success

LA Closet Design is excited to partner with the international not-for-profit organization, Dress for Success. On December 7th 2009, Dress for Success (DFS) unveiled its west coast headquarters in Hollywood, CA, in which I designed the Boutique Dressing Room and Reception Area. My firm’s underlying philosophy has always been to serve and empower other women, so this collaboration emerged organically.

Since 1997, DFS has been promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Women referred to DFS will get to “shop” at the Boutique, with the consult of a volunteer stylist, for a suit appropriate for her job interview. After securing a job, she can then return to the Boutique for additional clothing that can be mixed and matched to make several outfits, thus providing her with the basics for a professional wardrobe.

I designed a space that shifts the DFS experience from one of receiving charity to an empowering and enjoyable shopping opportunity that provides a fashionable foundation for women to achieve their goals and aspirations. As you enter the doors of DFS, you are greeted by a reception area that proudly states the DFS mission statement stenciled along the entry wall, framed images of successful and influential women that have come out of the organization, and a lounge area for clients to relax in before their appointment. The Boutique was inspired by the luxurious, high-end walk-in closets I design in my core business, mixing colors, materials and design accessories, but on a modest budget. The end result is a space revealed with three dressing rooms, an island table, a full length mirror, an accessory center, and designated sections for suits, sweaters, purses and shoes.

Teaming up with Dress for Success was a natural fit, and we are so excited to be a part of this new legacy in Los Angeles.
