Keep reading to learn how web-savvy designer Brendan Kwinter-Schwartz creates fresh, pristine spaces with splashes of sassy color and pattern.
Is there a classic—a staple—that is always a part of your design…sort of a signature? What is it and what enables it to work in any environment?
White is my staple. I love the shell of the room to be mostly white – painted walls, flat roman shades, fabrics. This allows the furniture to become sculptural and the art to be the star of the room. It always looks fresh and gets better over time.
How important do you believe Websites, blogs, and social media are and will be in growing your business?
I believe websites are vital for designers. A picture is worth a thousand words. Social media and blogs keep my business very current- I am addicted to Twitter! This is a major way clients look for a designer today.
How did you become interested in interior design? Who were your mentors in the early days?
I became interested in interior design when I was 5 years old. My mother wanted me to have a newly furnished bedroom and I just adored my new wallpaper and pink formica built ins. My room was very avant garde- and after that I would sketch out new furniture for every room.
What do you do, or where do you go, for inspiration?
I find inspiration in all types of places. I have a huge collection of vintage design and art books and I spend a lot of time reading them. Travel always inspires me – as does nature. Rocks from a beach in Italy became the color of a dining room.
What is your favorite Benjamin Moore paint color to use for walls, ceiling, and trim?
Favorite Benjamin Moore colors - Silver Satin and Simply White are both favorites for walls. I like flat finish for walls and semi gloss for trim. In one room I like to paint the ceiling a high gloss exciting color – like Lemon Meringue.
Why do you think a well chosen paint color is critical to the success of a room design? What are the top 3 factors you take into consideration when choosing a paint color?
The right color paint is key to the ultimate success of the design. Paint is the trickiest element – because it looks different in every room and every type of light. I choose the color based on the fabric scheme of the room, the light in the room and the art collection.
Do you see a trend in clients requesting projects with quicker deadlines? How are you changing your design strategy to accommodate their requests?
This entire year has been filled with clients who want projects completed in record time. Most of my clients are able to make decisions quickly and don’t like to wait long for their purchases. Maybe it is a New York state of mind – this city is so fast paced.
Was there any lesson you learned early on in your career that has stuck with you?
A clients mother once said that every room needs something black. I had just completed her daughters home and she liked what I had done. I have quoted her ever since.
What role does artwork play in your designs?
Artwork is so essential to the outcome of the project. I always want to pick the art first for my projects. This ensures a cohesive look throughout.

Elegant, yes. Mostly white–not so sure. Often, white can feel sterile and cold. It does indeed cause furniture and accents to take center stage; but one has to consider images that color schemes bring to mind. White can project, lifeless, winter wastelands; or heaven-forbid, low rent apartments from more desperate and income deficient days. Her work truly is lovely though.

Gorgeous work. Love all the white! I’m currently working on a house in 5 shades of white.
In the third picture down I was wondering if that was a fan and if so who the manufacturer is?
it was very interesting to read.

Refreshingly gorgeous! The white is a stunning backdrop allowing her furniture and artwork to make a dramatic statement.
I think it’s beautiful!
Very nice article, thanks! I’ve subscribed to your RSS feed. Please keep up posting.
How about some houses that don’t look like antiseptic showrooms of artfully arranged meaningless stuff. We like real houses for real folks of every ilk, not stage sets. PLEASE.
