Color Collective: Angela Free

What inspired you to choose these colors?
You might think that a room painted many shades of white would read as an absence of colour or cold, but the result is a marvelously complex light play. My objective with this room was to create a sense of light, calm, and livable comfort- an intimacy and a juxtaposition of soft colours popped with contrasts. Richness and depth in fabrics and window treatments are minimized to allow as much light as possible to enter the space. A very subtle faux linen paint pattern created by Katherine Jacobus, in multiple shades of white in each of the wall moldings, created a sense of depth and dimension, and served as a backdrop for setting off other shades and shapes. The paint on the ceiling is high gloss in a very pale rosy white which created a soft reflective glow.

What inspired you to choose these paint colors?
We wanted a soothing color that could be fresh and warm at the same time and it needed to be the element that pulled many details together. The house is surrounded by beautiful trees and a view of Mt. Diablo, so nature had a lot of impact on the general direction for the design of the overall house and ultimately the paint colors selected. There are many artisan crafted touches which we wanted to highlight so it was (more…)

Our Perception of Color
2 comments Posted on Sep 6, 2009 by Benjamin Moore What is Color?
Defining Color
The perception of color is a phenomenon of light - a form of energy with its own frequency and wavelength. Shine a light through a prism and you’ll see it divide into six color families: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. White light is the combination of all colors, while black is the absence of all colors. We perceive color due to the pigments in a given object. A blue pillow appears blue to our eyes because the pigment in the pillow is absorbing all the colors of the light except for the color blue reflecting back to us. (more…)

How Light Changes Our Perception of Color
1 comment Posted on Aug 29, 2009 by Benjamin Moore The type of light under which color is viewed impacts how we perceive a particular hue.
Temperature
Whether we perceive a color as warm or cool is relative to the particular color and its surrounding colors. Generally, reds, yellows, and oranges are warm colors, while blues, greens, and violets are considered cool. Warm colors tend to “advance” or “condense” a room, while cool colors “recede” or “expand” a room. Combining both warm and cool colors in a decorating scheme intensifies the temperature of the respective colors. (more…)

Benjamin Moore Baby’s Breath
No comments Posted on Jul 4, 2009 by Shane
Working on the design for a townhouse in a suburb of San Francisco, my first step was to simplify and unify the wall colors. I went with Benjamin Moore’s Baby’s Breath (OC-62). I love how this paint works almost anywhere – it can look grey, light blue, and even white (but it’s more interesting than white). The color works with almost any color combination. We used it all over the house. Click here to GET THIS LOOK.
